![]() The IC-201 ($1,000 each) provides an ideal solution for creating true soundstage imaging where the only practical mounting option is in the ceiling. The combined low-pass response of the crossover and the drivers' acoustical rolloff is about –18 dB/octave.BG Radia launched a new LCR loudspeaker designed for high performance in-ceiling applications. The measurements here are for the movie mode with the crossover bypassed the music mode introduced a couple of very tiny changes in frequency response but, more important, brought the subwoofer's overall level down by about –5 dB. ![]() Close-miked frequency response shows a –3-dB point at 25 Hz. Using CEA-2010 measurement techniques, with four of the subwoofer modules lined up together, I got 110.1 dB from 40 to 63 Hz and 89.3 dB from 20 to 31.5 Hz. The BGX-S6B has the same general characteristics I measured in its big brother, the BGX-S12B: solid punch in the second octave of bass but much less output in the bottom octave. The impedance phase curves of both speakers are moderate, never exceeding –35°. This is helped by the ribbon drivers, whose impedance runs fairly high and mostly flat. As is often the case with complicated, multipolar arrays, the response varied considerably at different angles.īoth speakers will be easy for practically any amplifier to drive because their sensitivity is high - in the low-90-dB range - and their impedance curves never dip very low. The averaged measurements showed a lot of treble rolloff. The SS-303's measurements were pretty jagged, as you might expect from the multidirectional driver array. The curve looked similar but tilted down on the right (treble) side I calculated ☑3.9 dB from 55 Hz to 20 kHz. In case you're curious how it measured from 2 meters, the treble rolloff was much more extreme. Off-axis response was great: At 45° and 60° off-axis, it looked quite similar to what you see here, just with more treble rolloff and the flattening of that peak at 11 kHz. There's a broad dip centered at 1.3 kHz, with small response peaks centered at 2.2, 3.7, 5.8, and 11 kHz. As I suggested, it's not as bass-heavy in a normal application as it appears in this graph. Given the measurement difficulties, the LA-550's frequency response looks fairly smooth. The LA-550 and SS-303 responses are normalized to 0 dB at 1 kHz, the subwoofer normalized so that its peak response shows as +3 dB. Again, measurements were made with the grille in place and using a BG-supplied enclosure with foam attached to the corners. ![]() The LA-550 was mounted in one of the enclosures BG supplied, with foam attached to the corners to prevent diffraction.įor the SS-303, I was able to run measurements much the same way I usually do with a multipolar surround speaker: averaged quasi-anechoic response at 2 meters from 0° to 60°, smoothed to 1/12 octave and spliced at 400 Hz to a close-miked measurement of the woofers. I ran all measurements with the grille in place. The splice point was 600 Hz, much higher than the normal ~240 Hz because of the greater measurement distance. Take these measurements as an approximation.įor this speaker, I spliced the close-miked response of the woofers to the quasi-anechoic measurements of the speaker, averaged from 0° to 30° off-axis and smoothed to 1/12 octave. As a result, the speaker probably shows more treble rolloff than you'd hear in a normal installation. So I ran them at 3 meters, the farthest I could get the speaker from the mike while still being able to remove reflections off nearby objects from the response. It's not practical with my equipment setup and available space to run measurements at this distance. The BG LA-550 proved extremely difficult to measure because its long driver array doesn't really "add up" acoustically until you're about 15 feet away. Sensitivity (SPL at 1 meter with 2.8 volts of pink-noise input)īass output, subwoofer (CEA-2010 standard) There's no denying that it's a niche product, but if you're in that niche, it's something you should hear. In the right setting - a very large living room or custom home theater with the wall space to accommodate 6-foot-high speakers - the LA-550/SS-303 combo delivers some of the finest movie sound you'll hear outside of, say, the Mann Village Theater in Los Angeles.

![]() The only other question with a similar result was “The twists, turns, and secrets were exciting and memorable.” So if any of the game’s strengths didn’t shine particularly bright, it may have been its responsiveness to your choices and its unpredictability, but those were still strong aspects.Ĭonversely, feedback on the sex scenes was the most enthusiastic by far, with 86% of supporters emphatically agreeing that it was the best part of the game. ![]() Still, I did find it interesting that this question scored relatively low. Where most of the questions were consistently a slope upward towards “Yes!” the question about the game feeling “alive” actually peaked at just a “Yeah, Kinda.” But if you look at the numbers, I weighted each result from 1 to 5, and all response groups averaged a 4 our higher– meaning that on average, half of the population falls into the range of mildly agreeing or better. The notable standouts in this category were on these two questions. ![]() On a five-point scale, most of them got a max result of an emphatic “Yes!” from at least 50% of you, and none of the options averaged lower than a “Yeah, Kinda.” So it looks like you guys largely agree with all of the aspects I described as things I thought were successes with MVOL! I tried to encourage folks to vote low for anything they didn’t really care for or notice, but overall the results in this category were all very heavy toward agreeing that each aspect described was good. The first was about: The BEST part of MVOL to you This was the smallest survey, with two basic series of questions. With all that out of the way, let’s start looking at the results! I’ll go over the mass data for each survey, then talk some about the comments and such that I received at the end. This turned out pretty big, so here’s a small table of contents to help you get around quickly! Very rough ballpark numbers here, but it partly explains why supporter responses can be a little more “jagged,” since it was a smaller sample size. Between pre- and post-v0.91 respondents, supporter responses would increase between 10% and 50%, while the responses as a whole just about doubled. The numbers fluctuated some from survey to survey, but roughly, about 1/10 of the respondents were usually supporters. This means that all the data has been split into four categories: supporters that responded before v0.91, all people that responded before v0.91, then all supporters, and all people that responded, period. I set up a formula to check those emails automatically against a big list of emails I have for recent supporters and took all those responses as a subset as well. Secondly, as you may have noticed, I asked for Patreon emails to check if the survey taker was a supporter. I was interested to see if there might be a difference in responses between people that actively check my news outlets and those that only see news that’s blared out along with a new version of the game. ![]() I downloaded the results for all of them immediately before I released v0.91 (which I used to promote the surveys to a lot more people) then downloaded the results again a few weeks after. If you don’t read this, you’re probably gonna be pretty confused looking at the rest! I’m gonna show some of the graphs I’ve made here, skipping some where I feel like I can summarize the results easily, but these are probably gonna look pretty confusing at first, so let me explain what I’ve done with the data.įirst off, I didn’t just take all the data in one big batch and see what people thought. This has already turned into a huuuuge post, so I’ve decided to hold off on the final survey and talking about the write-in feedback I got from folks and go over that in another post a little down the road! If you’d like to just get the short version of what stood out most, there’s a link to skip to the conclusion in the table of contents below. It’s taken a lot more time and work to get this all put together than I expected, but I’m definitely getting some helpful info! Today I’m gonna go over the results from the first three surveys and how I’m interpreting them, then talk about how it’ll influence my choices from here. Alright! I rolled out a big series of surveys to cap off a big series of posts talking about how I think MVOL has gone and what I’m going to do from here, and I gave a healthy amount of time for everyone to give their opinions before I downloaded all the data and spent some time wrangling it up into a bunch of useful numbers and graphs. ![]() Though they likely date from centuries after Diogenes of Sinope, the letters offer an intriguing glimpse into the sustained interest in Cynicism as well as its core values. The Cynic Epistles purport to be the correspondences between Cynics, including Diogenes, Diogenes’ student Crates, and even Socrates. They are discussed by Julian the Apostate, Plutarch, and Stobaeus, to name a few, while Diogenes and Cynicism figure prominently in the satires of Lucian and Pseudo-Lucian. The latter overlaps with Plato and Aristotle while the Diogenes who writes of him lives centuries later.įortunately, other accounts of Diogenes and the Cynics exist from Stoic sources, such as Dio Chrysostom and Epictetus, and from those arguing with the Stoics, like Philodemus. Diogenes Laertius lives in the 3rd Century CE, while Diogenes of Sinope’s dates from C. Though Antisthenes was a close companion of Socrates and figures as a prominent interlocutor in Xenophon’s Socratic dialogues, his influence is eclipsed by that of Diogenes.Ī principal source for our knowledge of Diogenes’ life and thought is Book VI, Chapter 2 of Diogenes Laertius’ Lives of Eminent Philosophers (for anyone who has yet to encounter it, or who has only read the sometimes prudish and stodgy Loeb edition linked above, a treat awaits in Oxford University Press’ 2018 version, adroitly translated by Pamela Mensch and edited by James Miller). According to the stories about Diogenes, he is preceded by Antisthenes, who may have been the first to be called “Cynic”. They had no formal school or locus, unlike Plato’s Academy or Zeno’s Stoa, practicing philosophy in public and leading lives that were exemplary of their philosophical commitments. Though there are varying accounts of its transference this association, it adheres to the chosen life of unconventional philosophers known for their poverty, freedom, virtue, and fearless laughter. ![]() The word in antiquity differs considerably from current usage κυνικός, transliterated as kunikos or kynikos, simply means “dog-like”. He undoubtedly offers a fiercer version of ethics than Socrates, but, to tritely paraphrase Polonius, there is method in Diogenes’ madness.ĭiogenes’ philosophical position is as a first and paradigmatic Cynic. This leads some of his contemporaries to view him as a hyperbolic version of Socrates, or, as Plato would say, a “Socrates gone mad”. Diogenes is also known for fearless truth-telling, improvisational responses as well as indelible performances, an embrace of poverty and so-called “shamelessness”, and a tenacious ethical resilience. Diogenes advocates a care for virtue and the state of one’s soul, resists false piety and conventional attitudes toward reputation and value, and remains unflappable in perilous situations. The similarities between Diogenes and Socrates are hard to ignore. Whereas Socrates identifies as a gadfly, Diogenes is a dog, and with him, ethics gains its bite. In the generation that follows Socrates, however, Diogenes of Sinope will unleash philosophy’s ethical potential with vitality and humour. This page was created in 2005 last modified on 12 October 2020.“If happiness and the chase for new happiness keep alive in any sense the will to live, no philosophy has perhaps more truth than the Cynic’s.”Īs the illustrious Roman scholars Varro and Cicero reflect on the ethical turn in Greek philosophy, they rightly focus on Socrates, observing that he was the first to draw philosophy down from the heavens, placing her in the cities of men, so that she might inquire about life and morality. LiteratureĪ biography was included in the Lives of Eminent Philosophers by Diogenes Laertius ( here). The Cynics became a kind of jesters, accepted at the royal courts because their criticism was essentially harmless. His philosophy gained some popularity because he focused upon personal integrity, whereas men like Plato and Aristotle of Stagira had been thinking about man's life and honor as member of a city state - a type of political unit that was losing importance in the age of Alexander the Great (who once met Diogenes text). ![]() Like his master, Diogenes refrained from luxury and often ridiculed civilized life. Human culture, however, is dominated by things that prevent simplicity: money, for example, and our longing for status. ![]() We are happiest when our life is simplest, which means that we have to live in accordance with nature - just like animals. The essential point in this world-view is that man suffers from too much civilization. Both men are called the founder of the school that is known as Cynicism.
